VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — The first stage of an extradition hearing for a senior executive of Chinese telecom giant Huawei begins Monday in a Vancouver courtroom, a case that has infuriated Beijing, caused a diplomatic uproar and added to tensions between China and the United States.

Pompeo: Huawei Exec Meng Wanzhou Will Not Be a ‘Bargaining Chip’ in Trade War with China

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday that the United States is working to secure the freedom of two Canadians held prisoner by Communist China. Pompeo stressed that Meng Wanzhou, an executive of China’s Huawei telecom company held by Canada for rendition to the U.S. to face fraud charges, will not be used as a bargaining chip in the American trade war with China. China, meanwhile, ordered Canada to release Meng if it wants relations with Beijing to improve in any meaningful way.

China Arrests Canadian Citizen for Drug Offenses

China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday that another Canadian citizen has been arrested, this time on drug offenses. The Canadian foreign ministry, Global Affairs Canada, announced on Saturday that a Canadian had received consular services while under detention.

The two were arrested soon after Canada detained Huawei executive and Communist royalty Meng Wanzhou for possible extradition to the United States. The accusation of espionage was made three days after Canada announced Meng’s extradition hearing would proceed.

Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei spoke to foreign reporters this week for the first time since his company concluded a disastrous year of cyber-espionage suspicions, bans by the United States and other governments, and Canada’s arrest of Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou, who happens to be Ren’s daughter. Ren did some damage control for Huawei in his press engagements, striving to project optimism and stressing his corporate independence from the Chinese Communist government.
